Boating on the Youghiogheny River

For those who prefer to propel their boats with a paddle, the Youghiogheny River has plenty to offer. From the outflow area of the dam and extending for approximately 20 miles downstream, paddlers can enjoy one of the most popular rafting, kayaking and canoeing rivers in the eastern United States. The boulder strewn stretch of river below Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania, is renowned for its whitewater and is often the scene of national kayaking competitions. With a long season, reliable water, and varying levels of difficulty, the Yough has something for everyone. Rapids on the Lower Yough are Class III-IV, the Middle Yough features Class I-II runs, and the Upper Yough is a favorite of experienced paddlers who come for its Class V+ whitewater.

In the Confluence area "Riversport" is the outfitter who provides equipment (rental and sales), training and guided tours. They also have six day "KID'S KAMPS" during the summer to teach kids kayaking. See their web site for details.

If you are interested in doing the Lower Yough there are outfitters available in the Ohiopyle area who provide equipment and guided tours.
